Yahoo has redesigned its Flickr photo-sharing service, offering users up to 1TB of storage for free.

Yahoo has redesigned its Flickr photo-sharing service, offering users up to 1TB of storage for free.

The long-overdue revamp includes a new interface based around higher-resolution pictures and a new app has also been launched for Android devices.

Yahoo purchased Flickr in 2005 as the site became increasingly popular, but failed to keep up with rivals such as Facebook and Pinterest.

Flickr’s tagline used to be “almost certainly the best online photo management and sharing application in the world”, but the humble brag has not been true for years as sharing photos online has become dominated by social networking, while the need to store photographs has decreased thanks to cloud storage services.

Likewise, Flickr failed to capitalise on the mobile market with its basic app for iPhones out-performed by products such as Instagram.

But the new-look site should entice users back to the service and it’s ability to host large images in full resolution is a big advantage over the likes of Facebook, where they are compressed.

Key features include:

1TB upload limit – enough to store more than half a million six-megapixel photos

Redesigned user-interface that fills more of the page with pictures at the expense of white space

New Activity Feed allowing users to see their own recent uploads mixed together with those of their friends

New Android app offering a more photo-centric design than the previous version, bringing it closer in line to an iOS update released at the end of last year

Larger 200MB limit on the size of each photo – previously, paid-for accounts had a 50MB limit and free accounts 30MB

Three-minute cap on playback of video clips rather than the earlier limit of 90 seconds

Flickr currently has more than 90 million monthly active users, but just as importantly, the service has been reinvigorated.

Its mobile-first approach has made it relevant again, while that terabyte of storage is an attractive proposition for any keen photographer.

Business networking site LinkedIn has announced a long overdue redesign with a cleaner, simpler and more dynamic homepage.

Business networking site LinkedIn has announced a long overdue redesign with a cleaner, simpler and more dynamic homepage.

In a blog post, LinkedIn product manager Caroline Gaffney said that the redesign will offer “quick access to the relevant information and updates” that help users of the site “be great at their job”.

The new look brings a simpler and more modern design to the homepage experience, improving navigation between the pages and the updates – whether that may be shared news stories from key contacts or updates on people who have changed jobs.

The most important network updates and articles are now flagged at the top of the feed, highlighting trending topics, news stories and professional updates based on what is being followed and discussed.

The stream is more social than before with the ability to like, comment on and share update items. A one-click “Connect” button makes it easier to add users who appear in your update stream to your list of contacts.

Additionally, the sidebar widget features useful information such as the number of visitors to your profile in the past 90 days. This is a great way to measure the effectiveness of your LinkedIn page.

The popular social network, which is said to have over 160 million users, has been increasingly focused on bringing more content to its platform.

“We look forward to making the LinkedIn homepage your go-to destination to discover and discuss what matters to you, your industry and your professionals network.”

The new design is set to roll out to users over the next few weeks and will be followed by some new features for improved functionality and customisation, perhaps enticing some users back after their unfortunate security breach last month.

The Internet is going to get a whole lot bigger in 2013 with the release of hundreds of new domain name extensions.

The Internet is going to get a whole lot bigger in 2013 with the release of hundreds of new domain name extensions.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Domains and Numbers), the body responsible for managing and coordinating the Internet’s Domain Name System, has begun the process to introduce new gTLDs (generic Top Level Domains) in order to increase competition and consumer choice for new domain name extensions online.

Today there are just a few gTLDs available, for example: .com, .net, .org, .biz, and .info. But from next year you will be able to purchase city-based domains such as .london and .paris, industry sectors such as .cars and .music and even web slang like .lol.

A study by Sedo, the Internet domain name marketplace and monetization provider, revealed that the most sought after domain extension is .shop.

Sedo’s research was based on the nearly 2,000 applications ICANN has received from organisations seeking new domain extensions that will join the existing suffixes.

Some of those were from companies wishing to run their own custom domain based on their name, for example: .google, .nike and .coca-cola, and some from domain registrars that are purchasing them on behalf of others or are looking to profit by selling them off.

The limiting factor in generating new domain name endings is the cost involved. The one-time application fee is $185,000, and annual charges are, at a minimum, $75,000 per each ending. Nevertheless, for big corporations, these fees represent insignificant monetary levels.

Two or more applicants can’t be granted the same top-level domain name, which makes certain extensions more desirable than others. And with nearly 40 percent of all submissions having more than one applicant, there are going to be battles over the “.app” and “.blog” type of domain extensions.

It may be expensive, bu there are many positives to the new scheme. Better innovation, the increase in brand visibility, and a clearer and more targeted domain for brands will help lead the charge for the ever expanding Internet, and it’s future.

Google’s Chrome is now the most popular Web browser worldwide, surpassing Microsoft’s Internet Explorer for the first time, according to the latest figures from StatCounter.

Google’s Chrome is now the most popular Web browser worldwide, surpassing Microsoft’s Internet Explorer for the first time, according to the latest figures from StatCounter.

After years of slowly chipping away Internet Explorer’s market share, Chrome took the lead with 32.76 percent, while IE dipped to 31.94 percent.

Just a year ago, Internet Explorer was leading the Web browser market share with 43 percent, followed by Mozilla Firefox with 29 percent, and Chrome was third with 19 percent.

Twelve months later, IE has lost 12 percent of the browser market share while Chrome gained 13 percent to the detriment of IE and Firefox, which also lost about 4 percent of its users and now comes in at just over 25 percent.

This is not the first time Chrome has leapfrogged Internet Explorer. For a single day in March, Chrome was estimated to have held a few percentage decimals over IE. This time however, Chrome overtook IE for the entire week, though by still less than a percentage point.

Although the difference is minimal, Chrome has been on an upward trend for quite some time, due to its simple user interface and improved loading speed compared to its rivals.

However IE still is the default web browser for Windows machines and with the launch of Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 later this year, it throws up the question whether Windows tablets will limit third-party browser functionality.

Chrome is currently our preferred choice of browser and we hope its popularity continues to rise. Faster loading speeds, good CSS and HTML 5 support and greater browsing security are helping us create better websites for clients and their users.

You can download Google Chrome for free here.
